Its important to debate about the origins of intelligence because its a controversial topic that has many people thinking about. People are either on the side that intelligence is expanded through nurture while others believe its nature that is the main factor of intellect in humans. "Nature endows us with inborn abilities and traits; nurture takes these genetic tendencies and molds them as we learn and mature." I agree with this quote because i believe our intelligence is not just based on genes passed down from parents or environmental factors, but also from what ours parents and elders have taught us. From Chapter 6 in Genome, I learned that if environmental factors didn't play a role in intelligence then theoretically, all twins should have the same personality and intelligence. But this is not true. Understanding that both nature and nurture are responsible for our intelligence is important because it helps people recognize that even if you come from a family from a low IQ, it doesn't mean that you will turn out dunce as well. Nurture such as in the from of learning by teachers or adults also contribute to the development of the mind. This relates to me because I come from a family that neither parent's first language was English. Through nurture, I learned from my parents to be literate in Spanish and in school I learned how to read and write in English. For nature, I use my instincts to figure whats right from wrong. This is true for everyone around the world. Therefore, maybe this gene of "instinct" is inherited from our mother and father.
